Dear Editor,

It appears that President Bush will follow through on his threatened veto of a bill that would provide health care to an additional three million American children currently without care. Should this happen, members of Congress must vote to override the veto. To do otherwise would sacrifice the lives and health of millions of children to empty abstractions about the role of government or the supposedly free market.

The profit-first health insurance industry earns its profits by denying adequate health care to 100 million Americans, including millions of children. These children can't be blamed for their economic circumstances. They should not be punished.

It's doubtful that those who vote to sustain Bush's veto would be willing to explain themselves to a roomful of children whose lives and health they condemn. And that betrays the fact that they are aware of the immorality of their actions.

The children must come first. Override Bush's veto. Expand the children's health care program (SCHIP).
